Desmond- The Arc of McLennan County

“We just hold him. The tears will start coming and it’s like he’s coming apart from the inside out and he can’t help himself and he needs you to hold him in.

“Desmond seems very, very intelligent to me. Very intelligent. I think if we can ever get past those behaviors, we’re going to find a genius there.

“When Desmond is happy, it’s beautiful.”

-Brandy Abel Clark, Staff Member at The Arc of McLennan County

Podcast Ep 8: Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children

advocacy center podcast art

Dale Smith and Randy lane sit down with Executive Director Barbara Wright to talk about how The Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children helps victims transition to survivors.

About the Advocacy Center:

Many people are hurting because of an act of violence committed against them.  Anyone – men, women, and children may be affected by violence. Our children are subjected to neglect, physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Research shows as many as 1 in 4 girls will be victims of sexual abuse by the time they are 18-years-old. For boys, the number is 1 in 6. Often the abuse is a “family secret” passed from one generation to another.

There is hope and restoration at the Advocacy Center. The Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children began in 1976 as the Waco Rape Crisis Center. It has grown into an umbrella agency with three programs, the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) The Victims Center, and Prevention and Education – offering many services to the hurting in our community.

Over the past year the Advocacy Center for Crime Victims and Children has conducted 569 developmentally sensitive and legally sound forensic interviews for children ages 2-17.

Leadership Development Graduation!

Congratulations to Jesus Said Love, The Arc of McLennan County, Nurse-Family Partnership, Christian Women’s Job Corps, and Shepherd’s Heart on graduation from our 360 Solutions Leadership Development Sessions.

Each year, TFNB Your Bank for Life and 360 Solutions, a business consulting organization in Waco, Texas, provide leadership development for all 24 of our Charity Champions free of charge. This kind of training is something most charities can’t afford. It’s just one way we give back to our Charity Champions.

Last Session of the Year and Graduation

It’s almost time for the last Leadership Development session of the year! This session will be a bit different than usual as our 2017 Charity Champions will be graduating. We encourage our winners to bring their entire staff for this special occasion.

This month, 360 Solutions‘ CEO Chip Wilson will cover Emotional Intelligence. Emotionally competent people exude self-confidence, which makes them good leaders and active team players. They maintain an optimistic outlook on life which helps them overcome obstacles.

March 2018 Leadership Development Session: Teamwork

360 Solutions Facilitator Kent Hutchison lead a group of 80+ Charity Champions in a session on teamwork early last month. Kent talked about building relationships before expecting members to perform well as a team.

Kent had participants draw their own “coat of arms” to share in small groups. Each person drew what was most important in their lives. Sharing helped build relationships by opening up about more than superficial topics.

Participants also took a short quiz to find out more about their specific personality type. Each of the four main personalities corresponded to types of birds: eagles (direct, leaders), owls (technical, analytical), peacocks (social, motivating), and doves (peacemakers). Once in a group based on their personality, participants put together presentations about how they could work better with other groups.
